Before departure

Set up, verify, test.

  1. 01

Add an international card to Alipay

Use your real passport details when prompted. Complete verification while you can contact your bank.

  2. 02

Add Weixin Pay as a backup

A second wallet can help when a merchant flow or mini-program behaves differently.

  3. 03

Tell your bank about the trip

Confirm China transactions, app-based verification, and cash-withdrawal fees.

  4. 04

Carry a physical card and some RMB

Look for matching Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay, or other network marks at the terminal or ATM.

A resilient wallet

One phone. Two backups.

Primary: Alipay or Weixin Pay with an international card.

Backup one: the physical card used in the app.

Backup two: a modest amount of RMB cash.

Never hand your unlocked phone to a stranger to “fix” a payment problem.
